A fifty one kilogram cod was captured in the waters outside Henningsvær

This is a drawing by the artist Dagfinn Bakke (Lofotposten) of Kaare Eilertsen with a huge cod.

Kaare Eilertsen was related family with todays owner of Henningsvær Rorbuer

The main house, where the restaurant and some of the accommodation units are located, used to be the main base for the fisherman Kåre Eilertsen. It was the base for both his boat and his fishing gear/equipment. Kåre was a fisherman his entire life, ever since his early youth.

The boat with which Kåre caught the large cod was the Danish seine vessel Anker.

51-kilo cod caught off Henningsvær:

There is a lot of good news from the Lofoten Sea these days. The fishing has evened out so that fish are being caught everywhere, and the catch is 6,000 tonnes above last year’s. In the midst of all this, Lofotposten has set a new record in its weekly competition for who can haul the biggest fish out of the sea. And now word has come from Henningsvær that a Danish seine boat has caught a giant fish weighing 51 kg! It was Kåre Eilertsen who hauled it over the gunwale, and it was not “small talk,” as they say.

A great-grandmother at 20:

It is very rare to catch cod weighing over 50 kilos. I, for one, have never heard of it. The specimen delivered in Henningsvær must have been an old “grandmother or great-grandmother” of about 20 years, said marine researcher Odd Smedstad at the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen to Lofotposten. According to science, coastal cod can grow up to 43 kilos, but we have heard of specimens weighing both 46 and 47 kilos, says Smedstad.
